India Gate

Reaching India Gate is easy as it sits in the center of New Delhi. The nearest metro stations are Mandi House (1.8 km), Khan Market (around 1.5 km), and Central Secretariat (roughly 2 km). From any of these stations, a short auto ride of 3–5 minutes (₹30–₹100) will take you directly to the monument. Entry is completely free, open 24 hours a day, and you can walk right up to the arch without any ticket.

India Gate was created to remember thousands of soldiers who lost their lives in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War, and their names are etched across the monument. Later, in 1972, a new flame called the Amar Jawan Jyoti was placed beneath the arch to pay tribute to those who died in the 1971 Indo-Pak conflict.

The grounds around India Gate are lively and welcoming. Well-maintained lawns, wide walking paths, and illuminated fountains make the area especially beautiful in the evenings. A new food court has also opened nearby, offering dishes from more than 10 Indian states, with affordable options starting at ₹50. Earlier known for its street food vendors, the area continues to attract both tourists and locals.

India Gate is also central to several national ceremonies. Contrary to common belief, the flag is not hoisted here on Republic Day—it is unfurled by the President at Kartavya Path. On Independence Day, the Prime Minister hosts the ceremony at the Red Fort.
